Every June when hurricane season officially start, everybody in the Caribbean know say we entering that time of year when Mother Nature can decide fi show us who really in charge. And every September when things usually get serious, you either ready or you scrambling like everybody else trying to find the last piece of plywood in Half Way Tree.
At BCIC, we see firsthand every year how proper preparation can mean the difference between riding out a storm safely and dealing with months of stress, repairs, and financial headaches. So instead of waiting until the weather looking threatening, let’s talk about how to get your family and property ready before hurricane season reach full swing.
Understanding Caribbean Hurricane Reality
First things first – let’s keep it real about what we dealing with here in the Caribbean. Hurricane season officially run from June 1st to November 30th, but we all know the real action usually happen between August and October. September and October especially can be brutal, and that’s when we need to be most prepared.
Living in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean mean we can’t just follow generic hurricane advice written for people in Florida or the Carolinas. Our houses built different, our infrastructure work different, and our challenges are unique. When JPS power go down, it might stay down for weeks. When roads flood, sometimes the only way out of your community is by boat. When the airport close, you not getting any supplies from anywhere until things calm down.
That’s why our hurricane preparation need to be thorough, practical, and based on Caribbean reality – not some textbook written for people who never had to deal with zinc sheets flying through the air or roads that turn into rivers overnight.
Protecting Your Family: The Most Important Preparation
Your family safety come first, always. No amount of property damage worth risking the people you love, so let’s start with making sure everybody in your household know what to do when trouble reach your door.
Create a Family Emergency Plan
Sit down with your whole family and make a plan that everybody understand, from the adults down to the smallest children. Decide where in your house is the safest place to shelter during a storm – usually the most interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows and doors. Make sure everybody know how to turn off the main water valve and the electrical breaker box in case you need to shut off utilities quickly.
Choose someone outside of Jamaica as your family’s main contact person. During major storms, local phone lines often get overloaded or damaged, but sometimes you can still reach people in other countries. Make sure every family member have this contact person’s information memorized or written down somewhere safe.
Stock Up on Essential Supplies Early
Don’t wait until the weather start looking bad to go shopping, because by then the supermarket shelves going be empty and prices going sky high. Start building your hurricane supplies from early in the season – buy a few extra items each time you go grocery shopping instead of trying to get everything at the last minute.
You need at least one gallon of water per person per day, and enough for at least five days. That mean a family of four need minimum 20 gallons of clean drinking water stored safely. Don’t forget about your pets – they need water too. Stock up on non-perishable foods that don’t need cooking – canned goods, peanut butter, crackers, dried fruits, and anything else your family will actually eat if the power out for days.
Make sure you have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio so you can get news and emergency information even when the power out. Get plenty of flashlights and extra batteries, but also consider getting some solar-powered lights that can charge during the day. Candles can be dangerous during storms, so battery-powered lighting is much safer.
Prepare Important Documents
Get all your important documents together and put them in waterproof containers. This include birth certificates, passports, insurance policies, bank account information, medical records, and property deeds. Make copies of everything and store the copies in a different location, or scan them and store them digitally in cloud storage that you can access from anywhere.
Don’t forget about your insurance policies – you going need these if you have to make claims after the storm. Make sure you know exactly what your homeowner’s and car insurance cover, and have all the contact information for your insurance companies saved in multiple places.
Protecting Your Property: Smart Preparation Saves Money
Now let’s talk about protecting your house, your car, and your other property. A little preparation before the storm can save you thousands of dollars in damage and months of stress dealing with repairs afterward.
Secure Your Home’s Exterior
Start by walking around your property and looking for anything that could become a flying projectile during high winds. Garden furniture, flower pots, decorative items, tools, and even small appliances left outside can turn into dangerous missiles when hurricane winds pick them up. Either bring these items inside or secure them properly to something solid.
Trim back any tree branches that hanging over your house or that could fall on your roof during a storm. Dead or weak branches are especially dangerous, so if you see any that look questionable, deal with them now before the wind deal with them for you. If you have large trees close to your house that look unhealthy, consider getting a professional tree service to assess them.
Check your roof for loose or damaged shingles and fix any problems you find. A small roof leak during a hurricane can quickly become major water damage inside your house. Clean out your gutters and drains to make sure water can flow away from your house properly during heavy rains.
Prepare for Power Outages
Assume the power going out and stay out for several days, because that’s often what happen during major storms. If you can afford it, consider getting a generator, but make sure you know how to use it safely. Generators must be used outside, never in enclosed spaces, because they produce deadly carbon monoxide gas.
Stock up on fuel for your generator, but remember that gas stations often run out of fuel or lose power themselves during storms. If you don’t have a generator, think about other ways to keep essential items working – solar power banks for phones, battery-powered fans, and coolers with plenty of ice to keep medicines and some food fresh.
Protect Your Vehicles
Your car is probably one of your most valuable possessions, so don’t leave it to chance during hurricane season. If you don’t have a garage, try to park your car somewhere that offer some protection from wind and flying debris. Avoid parking under trees or near buildings that might lose roof materials during high winds.
Keep your gas tank full throughout hurricane season, because gas stations often close during storms and it might be days before they reopen. Having a full tank also mean you can evacuate quickly if necessary, or use your car to charge phones and other devices if you have the right adapters.
Getting Your Insurance Ready for Hurricane Season
This is where BCIC expertise really matter, because dealing with insurance after a hurricane can be almost as stressful as the storm itself if you not prepared properly.
Review Your Coverage Now
Don’t wait until after the storm to find out what your insurance actually cover. Schedule a time to go through your homeowner’s and car insurance policies with your BCIC representative to make sure you understand exactly what’s covered and what’s not. Ask specific questions about wind damage, flood damage, fallen trees, and temporary living expenses if your house become unlivable.
Make sure your coverage limits are adequate for today’s repair costs, not what things cost when you first bought the policy years ago. Construction and repair costs have gone up significantly, so you want to make sure your coverage can actually rebuild or repair your property if necessary.
Document Your Property
Take photos or video of your entire property, inside and outside, before hurricane season start. This documentation can be crucial for insurance claims if you need to prove what your property looked like before the storm. Walk through every room of your house and record everything – furniture, electronics, appliances, personal belongings, everything.
Don’t forget about your yard, your car, and any outbuildings or storage areas. The more documentation you have, the easier it will be to file accurate insurance claims if damage occur. Store copies of this documentation somewhere safe, preferably in cloud storage that you can access from anywhere.
Know Your Claims Process
Understand how to file insurance claims with BCIC and what information you’ll need to provide. Save all the contact information for filing claims, and make sure you know what steps to take immediately after a storm if you have damage.
