Claiming can be a stressful process. There’s a lot to know and do, and you might be navigating a difficult time. That’s why we try to make the process simple and clear. This page has answers to the questions you might be asking if you need to make a claim.

You have up to 30 days to report your claim. However, if a police report is required, you’ll need to get it within 24 hours of your incident.

It’s always good to provide any supporting documentation we can use to help process your claim faster. This can be a photo, signed witness statement, police report or any factual documentation of the incident. The more evidence you supply, the smoother the claims process goes.

An excess is the amount of money we require you to pay towards the cost of your claim. This is your participation in the claim process to help with the fees resulting from the incident. This amount is usually stated in your policy schedule as a percentage.

You’ll receive an email confirmation specific to your type of claim. The confirmation will outline the next steps in the process, along with expected timelines. Your claim representative will reach out to request any additional information or updates we need.

Each claim is different. The time your claim takes will depend on the nature of the incident and any delays we don’t anticipate. For example, if the other party says they are not at fault, this extra complication can take longer to resolve.

The time it takes to reach a settlement depends on the nature of your claim. However, for small claims (such as windscreen replacement) this can be resolved within 24 hours, as long as you’ve provided the documents we need.

Vehicle theft claims

Once your report the theft to us, we’ll appoint an investigator to gather any more information we need to process your claim.

If you lose the original vehicle documents, you’ll need to get replacement documents from the examination depo and the tax office.

Yes. We need to see the vehicle documents before we can provide you with a settlement.

Yes. An excess is required under this claim. Check your policy schedule to see the amount of the excess you have to pay.

If your car is recovered after theft but has been damaged, we’ll cover the damage. You’ll need to provide an estimated cost to repair the damage and your preferred mechanic.

If we’ve settled a claim for theft and you later recover the stolen vehicle, the vehicle will become the property of BCIC.

Windscreen

Within 24 hours from when you reported the damage.

No. We’ll accept a photograph of the damaged windscreen as evidence for your claim.

No. Windscreen claims do not affect your No Fault Discount benefit.

No. You don’t have to pay an excess for this type of claim.

No. If your vehicle is damaged beyond the windscreen, you need to report your claim as damage to your vehicle.
