Occupational Health and Safety
POLICY STATEMENT
BCIC is committed to providing a consistently safe working environment for all of its employees.
To accomplish this objective, BCIC will adhere to the spirit and the letter of the Safety and Health at Work Act (SHaW) and the Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental Act 2005 as proclaimed and will implement and maintain Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental rules for all areas of the company’s operations in harmony with all the laws governing occupational health and safety.
The Company resolves to support this policy as follows:
- To co-operate and encourage co-operation between all members of staff on matters relating to Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental at work.
- To ensure that staff is adequately trained for their tasks, and are aware of general safety considerations within the plant, relating to themselves and their co-workers.
- To establish safety committees, to oversee all Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental matters in the Company’s operations.
- Be proactive to enhance safety when and where possible.
- To investigate and analyze all causes of safety violations and respond with required changes to reduce, limit and/or eradicate future safety violations.
- Through the safety committees, implement, monitor, and control safety systems within the Company’s operations.
- To provide information, instructions, supervision and training, in order to create and maintain safe work environments.
- To enforce protective measures and provide equipment required to maintain the safety of all concerned.
- To ensure that proper physical facilities and safety supplies relevant to the nature of work to be undertaken in a particular area are provided.
- To ensure effective communication of the safety rules and regulations.
- To ensure that all employees are reminded of the safety rules and regulations via prominent displays.
- To ensure so far as is reasonably practicable the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees.
- To provide a safe place of work and to ensure the health and safety of employees in keeping with Part IV of the Act.
- To provide safe equipment and tools for doing the job as per Part ll of the Act, Section 11 – 48.
- To ensure that workspaces and procedures meet ergonomic standards.
- To provide and maintain a means of escape in the event of a fire
Responsibilities of Employees
In keeping with the spirit and the letter of the law, all employees will be encouraged:
- To take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and other persons who may be affected by his acts of omission at work.
- To co-operate with management so far as is necessary as regards any duty or requirement imposed on BCIC by the relevant statutory provisions.
- To report to the management of BCIC, any contravention under this Act, or any Regulations made thereunder, the existence of which he knows.
- To use correctly the personal protective clothing or devices provided for his use.
- To adhere safety rules and regulations and not to nterfere with or use in an unauthorized manner any appliance, convenience or other thing provided in pursuance of this Act for securing the health, safety or welfare of the persons employed in the company.
In keeping with the provisions of the SHaW Act, BCIC acknowledges that employees have:-
(a) the right to refuse unsafe work; and
(b) the right to request and inspection (Section 104 and Section 102 respectively.
