Q: In a particular case study, why is it that BCIC had to wait for the other insurance company to accept the claim of a customer that called in? Why didn’t BCIC fix the customers vehicle and then claim the other insurance company after?
A: Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car and Third-Party covers your liability to other vehicles. This gentleman had Third-Party policy, so damage to his vehicle wasn’t covered by his policy. In this case the person who hit him was wrong, so we were able to assist him in recovering the repairs from the other person. If he had comprehensive coverage we would have fixed his car.
Q: Why do I insure for a year but only get a cover note for 30 days?
A: The cover note is a temporary certificate that we issue when we don’t have all the information required to issue a certificate. For instance, if you’re buying a car and you don’t have the licence plate, you need to carry the insurance to the tax office in order to collect your licence plates. The cover note is proof to them that the vehicle is insured. Once we have the licence number, then we will issue the full certificate for the year. Also, if the premium isn’t paid we issue a cover note until you pay fully.
Q: Up to what year vehicle do you insurance?
A: For private vehicles, up to 25 years old and public and commercial vehicles up to 18 or 20 years. There is also a policy for those of the classic car club once you can verify that it is a classic car and you are a member of the club. The age limits don’t apply to those vehicles.
Q: How do I make a claim if a passenger or pedestrian is injured by me?
A: It is your duty to report the accident to the company as well as to the police. We will investigate the accident if necessary. If there is a settlement that needs to be negotiated with the injured person we also take care of that. You don’t need to pay for anything. If you were negligent, we make a settlement with the injured ones.
